Carole Park STP Outfall Rehabilitation to Brisbane River
Project Carole Park STP Outfall Rehabilitation to Brisbane River
Client Urban Utilities
Location Brisbane, QLD
Scope
Dormway was engaged by Urban Utilities (UU) to construct the replacement for the existing flood damaged DN375mm AC outfall pipe from the Carole Park Sewage Treatment Plant into the Brisbane River, with the new outfall pipe to be designed and installed in accordance with the current environmental license requirements.
Outcome
Dormway was initially engaged to review a design solution completed by consultants engaged by UU, which was deemed cost prohibitive as well as resulting in a number of constructability challenges.
Following our preliminary input and suggestions, a revised design was developed and Dormway was subsequently engaged to complete the temporary works design and construct the new outfall.
The final constructed solution provided improved performance of the effluent outfall pipe in accordance with the license requirements and reduced the related environmental damage which was previously being experienced. The project was delivered on time and on budget with minimal disturbance to the immediate environment and to the satisfaction of all stakeholders including the adjacent landowners.
Key challenges
- Development of a cost-effective flood proof outfall design capable of being constructed with minimised environmental impact
- Design and construction of all temporary works including coffer dams and temporary bypassing of the existing damaged outfall pipe which was discharging 280 litres/second.
- Removal of the existing damaged piles and pile heads
- Access to the outfall through steep, vegetated banks and surrounding areas
