Construction of Sewer Pumps Stations (SPS) at Merrimac West Sewerage Catchment, Gold Coast
Project Construction of Sewer Pumps Stations (SPS) at Merrimac West Sewerage Catchment, Nerang
Client City of Gold Coast
Location Gold Coast, QLD
Scope
Dormway was engaged by City of Gold Coast to construct and commission a new sewage pump station (W58). The project also included the construction of 315m of DN750 gravity main.
New SPS W58 comprises a 5.8m diameter, 9m deep dry well, two 215kW pumps, an Odour Control Facility, gantry crane and switchboard, all housed within an 8.8m x 19m block building with an external wet well.
Two additional pump stations were required to be upgraded in parallel to enable commissioning of the new trunk and rising mains concurrent with the main W58 pump station.
Outcome
Caisson construction was selected for wet and dry well construction to minimise the required working area for the two wells within the constrained site footprint.
Despite the challenges associated with the constricted site and limited access, the project was delivered on time and to the satisfaction of City of Gold Coast, with minimal disturbance to all stakeholders and the environment.
Challenges
- A constricted site footprint with limited access, located adjacent to a local BMX track and Bowls Club
- The construction of new SPS W58 involved excavation in water-charged ground conditions to 11 metres deep
- New SPS W58 was located in close proximity to the existing pump station which was required to be kept operational until all SPS were commissioned
- Commissioning was dependent upon completion of the rising main construction works (by Others)
- Detailed planning and construction programming to ensure ability to commission systems concurrently
