Dormway

Construction of Water Reservoir at Tallai, Gold Coast

Project Construction of Water Reservoir and associated works at Tallai

Client City of Gold Coast

Location Gold Coast, QLD

Scope

Dormway was engaged by City of Gold Coast to construct a 210 Kilolitre reinforced concrete elevated water reservoir, including the decommissioning of the abandoned Glenrowan Reservoir and associated pipework and controls.

Outcome

Through a peer design review, Dormway was able to suggest several design improvements to the structure in order to reduce the risk of differential settlement.

Dormway also engineered an innovative formwork system for the project, reducing the necessity for large lay down areas on the constricted site, as well as working collaboratively with partnering suppliers to determine safe delivery solutions to overcome the steep site access and topographical challenges associated with the site.

Through the adoption of these innovative design and construction solutions, in combination with trenchless excavation for the watermain installation in areas surrounded by trees and close to residential houses, Dormway was able to successfully deliver the project for City of Gold Coast with minimal impact to the local community and environment.

Challenges

  • Located on the side of a steep hill, only accessible via a 300m council access track
  • The site was classified as a ‘black listed location’ by some suppliers as a result of the site access and topography limitations
  • Ground conditions were a key challenge for this project.  Spanning both rock and fill, the conditions created the potential for differential settlement between the reservoir and attached stairwell.
  • The construction site afforded a very limited work area and onsite storage area, in addition to its location adjacent to local residents
