Maroochydore Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) – Raw Sewage Pump Station Upgrade
Project Maroochydore Sewage Treatment Plant – Raw Sewage Pump Station (SPS) Upgrade
Client Unitywater
Location Sunshine Coast, QLD
Scope
Dormway was engaged by Unitywater to design and construct the refurbishment and upgrade works to the raw sewage pump station at the Maroochydore STP.
The project required full sewage bypassing of flows up to 750 L/s within an environmentally sensitive area, located close to the Maroochy River.
Outcome
Bypass planning and the development of backups and contingency measures to reduce the risk of the bypass system failing or resulting in a sewage spill were critical for this project.
The resulting SPS bypass system and management plan was developed based on pump performance, reliability and redundancy. Dormway also provided an innovative solution to reduce the risk of pump failure. With the bypass system installed, the pump station was refurbished and an epoxy coating system was applied to all internal surfaces.
The works were carried out as efficiently as possible to minimise time on bypass and risk. Despite the occurrence of various wet weather events during the works, the project was successfully completed on schedule, without any sewer overflows.
Challenges
- Working within an environmentally sensitive area located close to the Maroochy River
- Bypass planning, including the development of contingency measures to reduce the risk of the bypass system failing or resulting in a sewage spill
- Designing a bulletproof bypass system capable of managing wet weather flows up to 750L/s
