Mountain Creek to Kawana and Caloundra Sewerage Pipeline Project, Sunshine Coast
Project Mountain Creek to Kawana and Caloundra Sewerage Pipeline Project
Client Pipeline Driller Group
Location Sunshine Coast
Scope
Dormway was engaged by Pipeline Driller Group to construct all open trench sections of a new OD900 PE Sewer Rising Main comprising five individual sections spanning from Caloundra, Kawana & Mountain Creek on the Sunshine Coast.
Approximately 1,200 meters of pipeline was installed as well as all connections to existing infrastructure and to four individual drilled sections. The project involved construction within a challenging estuarine environment and water-logged trenches.
Outcome
Leveraging off our past experience working in these types of environments, we were able to propose design modifications to suit best practices for safe and efficient pipeline installation considering anchor block thrust restraint challenges present in this type of ground.
Communication with the public was critical for the successful delivery of this project, given the location of work sites within a heavily populated residential communities. Dormway worked closely with Pipeline Driller Group, Unitywater and Sunshine Coast Regional Council to manage traffic and pedestrian diversions to allow construction activities to proceed safely and without incident.
The wealth of experience from all parties involved, working together as one united team cemented the success of this project from an early stage. The project was rife with challenges from day one however constructability issues were mitigated by the team working collectively to ensure project timelines were met and safety of workers, the public and environment were maintained throughout the project.
Key challenges
- Construction in community areas with large plant and equipment
- Installation of large diameter pipelines around existing services, including protection of existing infrastructure
- Development and implementation of Network Intervention Plans for the connection to existing large capacity sewer pump stations and pipelines
- Maintaining and monitoring existing network flows during cut over works
- Acid Sulfate soils and groundwater
- Construction in extremely wet ground conditions and managing trench stability in wet silty sand and soft marine clay
- Tight working corridor through an environmental tree protection area
- Working within and beneath high voltage power lines
- Butt welding pipelines within deep trenches in water charged ground
- Management of environmental impacts associated with the crossing of tidal waterways
