Petrie Water Booster Pump Station and Network Modifications

Project Petrie Water Booster Pump Station and Network Modifications

Client Unitywater

Location Brisbane, QLD

Scope

Dormway was engaged by Unitywater to design and construct a new Water Pump Station (WPS) and to reconfigure the existing network to accommodate the new arrangement that would ultimately enable the Petrie Water Treatment Plant to be decommissioned.

In addition to the construction of a new WPS to feed the Petrie elevated tower and the associated pipework arrangement, the works also included 12 live cut-ins to the existing network on mains varying in size from 375mm to 600mm diameter, of various pipe materials including asbestos, DICL and MSCL.

Outcome

By working closely with both Unitywater and Seqwater right from the start, the project team was aligned and able to deliver the best outcomes for the project.   This included the development of an overall commissioning plan, including an emergency contingency for maintaining community water supply.

The end result was the successful delivery of the new WPS and decommissioning of the Water Treatment Plant.

Challenges

  • Significant site investigation work was completed to develop an optimised design solution for the water pump station located on a limited site footprint with a graded contour.
  • Detailed project planning was crucial to enable the construction and sequencing of the works, which included the excavation and installation of large diameter pipes in rock, adjacent to existing large diameter asbestos water mains, trees and overhead power.
  • The works also included constructing flanged large diameter pipework to millimetre accuracy to connect the new and existing mains in the steep sloping ground.
