Scope

Dormway was engaged by Urban Utilities to provide project delivery advice and construction services for the replacement of a collapsed 225mm diameter sewer main located under a highly trafficked section of Abbotsford Road, Bowen Hills.

Outcome

Following the completion of preliminary site investigations, a combination of micro tunnelling and open trench excavation was selected, and the alignment determined to avoid the multitude of services and encroachment onto private property.

Dormway was commended by Urban Utilities and the adjacent local businesses for the prompt and efficient delivery of a challenging project in difficult ground conditions with minimum disruption to stakeholders.

Challenges

  • Congested location in terms of traffic – accessing local businesses as well as commuter traffic accessing the adjacent Inner City Bypass
  • Comprehensive stakeholder management planning to ensure property access was maintained for adjacent businesses trading 7 days a week (including a sound studio)
  • Maintaining sewerage services to adjacent stakeholders throughout the works
  • Ground conditions ranging from marine mud to rock, teamed with water infiltration from nearby Breakfast Creek
  • Challenging ground conditions combined with numerous services and property boundaries required a well thought out design solution and construction methodology in order to execute the works within the constrained site
